By the end of the weekend, you will have a set of handmade books finished to take home and use and the skills to make more.

On Saturday we will start with stitched pamphlet and folded books to get into the swing of cutting, folding and covering for lovely, neat books. In the afternoon we will move onto making an album with an exposed stab bound spine.

On Sunday we will jump straight into making a fully cased-in, traditionally bound hardback book covered with gorgeous hand printed Japanese paper.

July

Drawing Day – with local artist Deb Allitt

Sunday 23rd July 10am to 4pm

£70 – All tools, materials, refreshments and lunch included.

Give your drawing techniques a lively exercise day.

Draw with charcoal, felt-tips, crayons, pens, brushes, pencils, collage, fabrics and paints.

Work on different scales from thumbnails to A2.

Draw from still-life, from photos, from artists, from imagination.

Expand, experiment, have fun, be challenged.

Note: Deb set up work stations around the room at which you can for example do a large charcoal drawing from a still-life set up; do a detailed pen drawing of a piece of jewellery on a tiny scale; create an abstract with a multitude of marks using felt-tips, crayons, pens, paints; use collage to “draw” from a landscape photo etc. At the beginning of the day we will do some fun drawing things together so that people understand the materials, mark making, scale etc of the later exercise.

August

Colour Day – with local artist Deb Allitt

Sunday 6th August 10am to 4pm

£70 – All tools, materials, refreshments and lunch included.

Devote your attention to the expressive beauty of colour.

Understand how and why artists have used colours in widely varying ways.

Make several small painting using different colour pallets.

Work from artists examples, from still-life, from photos, from imagination.

Push the limits and have a colour adventure.

Note: First we will look at photos of artists’ paintings which use colour boldly, non-representationally, atmospherically, and talk about the colours and how they create certain effects. Choosing an artist whose work you like, copy a section of a painting using the same colours. Use the same colour palette to create your own painting. Then use two new colour palettes working on two further paintings.

Cezanne Day – with local artist Deb Allitt

Sunday 20th August 10am to 4pm

£70 – All tools, materials, refreshments and lunch included.

What’s so special about Cezanne and what can I learn from him?

Look at Cezanne’s paintings, analyse and discuss.

Copy a section of one of his paintings to understand how it has been painted.

Working from a photo or still-life set up create a Cezanne-style painting of your own.

Learn from a maestro, understand more about the beginnings of modern art.

Note: I visited the recent Cezanne exhibition at Tate Modern and understood why he is regarded as the father of modern art. Studying his paintings you can see: the experimental and vulnerable feel of the work, bare canvas left showing, deliberate paint marks constructing a three dimensional subject on a two dimensional surface, very limited colour palettes, the clear relationship between his approach and the work of the Cubists, Matisse and the Expressionists.
